Avery, Milton Biography

Avery was born in Altmar, New York, and brought up in Hartford, Connecticut. Milton Avery was largely self-taught as an artist, but during his teens and 20s he took occasional art classes at the Connecticut League of Art Students and elsewhere in Hartford, while working at various factory jobs to support his family. In 1925 he moved to New York City to be closer to art galleries and other artists. Avery is noted ford for his inventive use of color and simplified shapes. Avery's oil paintings of figures, landscapes, and still lifes form a link between French painter Henri Matisse, who during the first half of the 20th century painted vivid, flat forms, and American color-field painters of the 1950s and 1960s who, like Avery, explored the expressive power of color. Avery painted many landscapes, particularly seashores; his daughter, March, was a frequent subject.

His friendships with young abstract artists, including Mark Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb, significantly influenced the development of color-field painting.
