Walter Ufer studied at the Royal Academy in Dresden, Germany, and at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1911 he abandoned a career in advertising to study oil painting in Munich and to travel across Europe and North Africa. Soon after his return to the United States, he moved to Taos, New Mexico, where a small art colony had been established in 1898. This was the first such colony devoted to the art of the American West, and in 1914 they formed the Taos Society of Artists, which exhibited throughout the United States and Europe.
